Welcome to St James Legal Advice Centre!

We provide free legal advice to those who cannot afford access to justice, and empower clients to understand their legal rights.  Our main focus is on solving legal problems such as helping people to claim benefits they are entitled to, housing repairs, and consumer problems. We also provide general advice and assistance with neighbours, unacceptable behaviour at work and so on. We can also provide access to mediation services.

Please note that we can't provide advice on criminal proceedings, and immigration. We also can't advise on debt or consumer credit. We're also unable to do advocacy in court, provide representation on a legal matter, or undertake certain work reserved to the legal profession. 

We operate a means testing policy. Generally, we cannot provide advice to people who:

1. Have a household income of over £40,000 per year  OR

2. Have accessible liquid assets (e.g. cash savings in a bank account) of over £20,000.

How we operate

We provide free in person services operating from St James’s Church Muswell Hill;  Wilton Community Church; and the Salvation Army in Wood Green. All clinics have wheel chair access. Please note that our clinics provide a drop in service and appointments cannot be made. 

OUR SERVICE IS PROVIDED IN PERSON ONLY. WE DO NOT RESPOND TO EMAIL REQUESTS FOR ADVICE.

We operate on a first come, first served  basis. You're more likely to be seen if you arrive early. We close our doors to clients 30 minutes before the clinic closing time.

Specialist Family Law and Employment Law clinics

We operate specialist walk in clinics on Family and Employment Law as follows:

• Family law clinic at our Wood Green clinic (see below for details) generally on the last Wednesday of the month. Upcoming clinics will be held on: 20th March, 24 April, 22 May, 26 June and 10 July 2024. 

• Employment law clinic at our Wilton clinic (see below for details). Upcoming clinics will be on: 26 March, 16 April, 30 April, 14 May, 28 May, 18 June, 9 July and 30 July 2024.
